Date: June 4th
and 5th, 2004. Commencement
was held together with the 28th Annual Resident-Alumni
Meeting at the Radisson Riverfront Conference Center in downtown
Augusta. We combined these two meetings for the first time which
providing a time of collegiality for these three doctors as the move
from being residents to alumni, from training to practice. Commencement & Roast. Drs.
Goei, Gokhale, and Nussbaum spoke at different times in the Friday afternoon
session. Dr. Nussbaum gave a brief address during the evening
banquet thanking and encouraging the
residents as they step into the next phase of their lives. Following
his own tradition Dr.
Gokhale made predictions of where each of the
residents and in some cases faculty will be in the year 2030. In
the world of Gokhalian Predictions fiction is probably stranger than
truth! Finally, in an amazing break from with his style of a slide
presentation accompanied by dicta-phone delivered music the music
finally was able to come out of the PowerPoint presentation! A
better sound, yes, but the good old days of the dicta-phone sure were
memorable. No great abuses were
showered upon the faculty when the residents had their turn to make
parting comments. They did, however, specifically thank Dr. Sumner
Fishbein for his many years of Friday morning glaucoma clinics. He
also has been to nearly all of the departmental education events, e.g.
Journal club, Graduation and Alumni Day meetings. He is retiring
from many years of faithful service to the VA and our residents. We
have enjoyed having this crew of residents and wish them well as they
enter the next phase of their lives. Dr. Crandall is doing a
glaucoma fellowship at Emory University. Private practice in
Virginia Beach awaits Dr. Gant and Washington State for Dr. Samy.
Thank you guys again for your hard work and participation in our
department. Reception: The
