The 42nd Graduating Class...

Bonnie Brooks, M.D.

Jeff Fuller, M.D.
- Chief Resident -

Milan Patel, M.D.

Date:  June 24th and 25th, 2005.

Commencement was held together with the 29th Annual Resident-Alumni Meeting at the Radisson Riverfront Conference Center in downtown Augusta.  This was the second year both meetings were combined together. It has worked well to have the alumni present at graduation.

Commencement & Roast.

Dr. Nussbaum began the commencement activities with has admonishments to the departing seniors.  Dr. Ambati followed with a roast of the residents.  He titled his parting shot: "Trinity:  Batman & Superman meet Wonder Woman".  The residents gave a roast of the faculty as well and they, too, had a big superhero theme? (I guess that had something to do with the Batman Begins opening on June 17th.).

Dr. Gokhale gave his predictions of the future of our residents.  The Dr. Brooks' were going to have eye care and sports medicine spas, and Dr. Patel was going to be merging these with resorts throughout North America.

Dr. Brooks is entering private practice in Brunswick / St. Simon's Island, Georgia.  Dr. Fuller will be entering a retina fellowship at the University of Iowa.  Dr. Patel will be entering a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at the University of California, San Diego.  Thank you guys again for your hard work and participation in our department.

Reception:

The alumni banquet and graduation reception was held in the Estes room at the Radisson Riverfront Conference Center on Friday evening, June 24th.

Before the banquet began Dr. John Riffle presented Dr. Sumner Fishbein with a certificate of merit for many years of service at the VA Medical Center where he ran numerous glaucoma clinics and helped the second year residents in their cataract surgery. He was mentioned in last year's graduation as well, but he did not formally finish his tenure at the VA until this year.  He still is faithfully present at grand rounds, journal club, visiting lecture events and alumni meetings.

Academic Activities:

On Friday Dr. Julian Nussbaum opened the program and we heard from all nine residents as they presented the research they have been participating in during the last year.  Drs. Snodderly and Ambati presented the 2 faculty talks for this years meeting and on Friday afternoon Dr. Tony Adamis gave his first talk followed up on Saturday morning by the David Hull Lectureship talk and a third talk.  Dr. Lindsey Harris presented work that she and Dr. Tom Aaberg had done on Saturday morning. Below are the talks which were presented by these three graduating seniors.

Bonnie Brooks, M.D.

"Pediatric vision screening: What's new and does it matter?"

Jeff Fuller, M.D.

"Vitreous penetration of orally and topically administered moxifloxacin in humans."

Milan Patel, M.D.

"Effect of 10% dextran on posterior membrane dystrophic and pseudophakic bullous corneas."
