Date: June 23rd
and 24th, 2006. Commencement
was held together with the 30th Annual Resident-Alumni
Meeting at the The Ritz-Carlton Lodge of Reynolds Plantation at Lake
Oconee, Georgia. This was the first time we met at this venue, and it
was very well received as the facilities are excellent and there is much
for kids and families to do while the families are in the meetings. Commencement & Roast. Dr.
Nussbaum began the commencement activities with has admonishments to the
departing seniors. Dr. Ambati followed with a
"Superhero" roast of the
residents. Dr.
Gokhale gave his "Before they were stars!" talk predicting the
fictitious future ophthalmology after these seniors make their
contributions. Dr. Gupta developed the "Disappearing
Laser" which does not damage the retina, or produce visible
spots. Dr. Hammond discovered a parasite with the acronym: SLOP
which was ravaging parts of the America's. The academy had an
initiative to "Stop Slop in 2020." Dr. Moore developed
the "disappearing glue." They all came together and used Dr.
Gupta's laser to chase the parasite out of the eye, Dr. Moore's glue to immobilize
it and Dr. Hammond's parasite removal spatula (The HPRS: Hammond
Parasite Removal Spatula) to remove it from the eye. This
presentation was a great success and brought much laughter from the
audience. Dr. Gupta
will be entering a
retina fellowship at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Hammond will
be entering private practice in Jackson, Tennessee. Dr. Moore will
also be entering private practice in Harlington, Texas.
Thank you guys again for your hard work and participation in our
department. Reception: The
alumni banquet and graduation reception was held at the Ritz-Carlton
Lodge on Friday evening. During the banquet, and after the talks by Drs.
Ambati & Gokhale, the residents gave some parting gifts to Drs.
Thomas and Gokhale who have been very strong players on our faculty
team, but have come to the point where they need to move on to the next
venue. They will be missed. Academic
Activities: On Friday Dr. Lane
Ulrich opened the program and we heard from all nine residents
as they presented the research they have been participating in during
the last year. Dr. Jerry Shields and Dr. Carol Shields were our
guest speakers for this years meeting. Their presentations were
superb and demonstrate how much can be done to diagnose and treat some
ocular and peri-ocular cancers. Cancer is a difficult subject for
patients, but through the excellent academic endeavors by physicians
such as these patients can be given hope. Below are
the talks which were presented by these three graduating
seniors.
