The 45th Graduating Class...

Yousuf Khalifa, M.D.
- Chief Resident -

Christian Nilson, M.D.

Timothy Root, M.D.

Date:  June 20th and 21st, 2008

Commencement was held together with the 32nd Annual Resident-Alumni Meeting at the The Savannah Lakes Resort and Marina in McCormick, South Carolina. This was the first time we met at this venue.  The techs and staff were invited and most of the department was in attendance.

Commencement

Where's the Roast?!  The dual traditions of Dr. Gokhale's "Before they were stars!" and Dr. Ambati's "Superhero" roasts have finally drawn to a close and blinked out...at least as far as we know...entertaining events they were, and fondly remembered they will be.  This years ceremonies were painted in a bit more sentimental fashion which went over well as it draws out so much of what a closing ceremony on residency should be about and it is easier for alumni and family to relate to.  Dr. Chip Oester did, however, put in a plug to Drs. Ulrich & Bogorad for a residents roast next year (always and option, but not often done).

Dr. Mac McLeod (Class of 1981) presented the best papers awards.  First place went to Dr. Hooman Harooni, second to Dr. Diego Espinosa and third to Dr. Yousuf Khalifa.  A first time (and probably only time) award was given to Dr. Timothy Root.  It was the Sundance Award for Dr. Roots most entertaining amateur video skills.

After the awards Dr. Ulrich spoke a word or two on the impact each of the senior's have had during their time in our department.  Following this the diplomas and gifts were handed out. Dr. Nussbaum closed out the commencement activities with his admonishments to the departing seniors.  The focus of his talk this year was to never allow the hustle and bustle of practice to de-humanize the delivery of health care to the point that compassion becomes secondary.

From here our seniors will scatter to different areas throughout the country.  Dr. Khalifa will perform two fellowships back to back. The first will be in uveitis and medical cornea at the University of California at San Francisco. The second will be in cornea and refractive surgery at the Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Dr. Nilson will enter private practice in Utah and Dr. Root will enter private practice in Florida.

Academic Activities

On Friday Dr. Julian Nussbaum opened the program and we heard from all nine residents as they presented the research they have been participating in during the last year. The talks were praised by the alumni present for their content and effort required to perform the investigations.  As has been typical the research had significant range and include a survey of the current trends in oculo-plastic surgery, factors predictive for LASIK enhancement, cannabidiol and arginase in retinal inflammation, and retinal neovascularization.

Dr. Debra Goldstein presented several talks on uveitis including excellent review of both anterior and posterior uveitis as well as cataract surgery in the uveitis patient.  Dr. Ronald Krueger gave the annual David Hull lectureship and presented informative information on wavefront LASIK and the femtosecond laser.
