Following a transitional year residency at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, PA,
Dr. Gupta completed his Ophthalmology residency at the Cole Eye Institute -
The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and went on to a two year fellowship at
Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA,
where he was appointed Chief Fellow, Cornea and Refractive Surgery, and
trained under Dr. Claes Dohlman, the inventor of the Boston Keratoprosthesis,
as well as Dr. Deborah Pavan-Langstan, leading clinician in Herpetic Eye
Disease.
Dr. Gupta has strong interests in cornea and external disease including infections of the front surface of the eye (infectious keratitis) including those related to contact lens, herpes, shingles, parasites, and fungus, ocular graft versus host disease, the Boston Keratoprosthesis (http://www.masseyeandear.org/specialties/ophthalmology/cornea-and-refractive-surgery/keratoprosthesis/), ocular surface reconstruction and anterior segment imaging. He has currently performed dozens of Boston Keratoprostheses, descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasties, and corneal transplants for poor vision from keratoconus, corneal swelling and failed corneal transplants and is now the Director of Cornea and External Disease at MCG. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He is a reviewer for Eye. He has also received a research grant from the Knights Templar. Dr. Gupta has been an author of articles in the peer review literature, including citations in the International Ophthalmology Clinics, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, and the Journal of Refractive Surgery. As well, he has authored chapters in medical texts, and lectured extensively at regional and national meetings. Dr. Gupta continues to be involved in the further education of the upcoming physicians with lectures to medical students and residents.
